Chi Kung Principles

CHINESE

MEDICAL

BREATHING

EXERCISES

"...In ancient times, there were the so called spiritual men; they mastered the universe; they controlled Yin and Yang. They breathed the essence of life; they were independent in preserving their spirit, and their muscles and flesh remained unchanged.

TAO:

"...the way, and the method of maintaining the harmony between this world and the beyond..."

"...the key to the mysterious intermingling of heaven and earth..."

"Those who follow the Tao achieve the formula of perpetual youth, and will maintain a youthful body…"

YIN:

"…shady, cloudy element; contracting; female; moon; night; water; cold; in and down flowing…"

YANG:

"Up and out flowing,"

"Yin is contained within Yang. Yang is contained within Yin. Both are ever present, in constantly changing relationship and determining all happenings in nature and life. The principle of these two elements form the basis of the entire universe."

MAN/WOMAN:

"...is the product of heaven and earth, the interaction of yin and yang..."

HEALING:

"...in olden times, the treatment of disease consisted merely of transmitting the essence (chi), and in the transformation of the life giving principle..."

Exhale                          Inhale

These symbols were drawn for me by Master Hu Bin when I studied with him in Beijing in 1985. They hold a great deal of meaning for me and they store many memories and lessons. As I look at them today, I see in the symbol for the exhale a bold vertical stroke that reminds me of the spine. It has what appears to be a serpent rising and coiling upward around the spine. (depicting what in Yogic literature is called the "Kundalini Serpent").  That same vertical stoke appears on the inhale too. But on the inhale, I see a downward diagonal stroke shooting thru what looks like a rounded belly. This reminds me to send the breath deep into the abdomen. Directing the breath energy into the "dan tien" is a basic practice in Chi Kung. What do you see in the symbols?

A BRIEF HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

First you may notice that there are different pronunciations: "Chi Kung" and "Qi Gong." (I guess it's like "Beijing" and "Peiking.") Choose the one you like. I use both.

The point is that Chi Kung underlies all of the martial arts and every healing art in the Orient.

There are five major schools of Chi Kung. Each tradition has a number of sub-sects and systems:

Buddhist: focuses on the development of mental clarity and ultimate liberation.

Taoist: for the purpose of longevity and for the cultivation of spiritual character.

Confucian: the moral quest for self-knowledge, and energy training.

Martial Arts: aims at physical health and self-defense and mental mastery.

Medical: for the prevention of disease and treatment of illness and injury.

The system I practice and teach is rooted in the medical healing tradition. It is based on the essence of all Qi Gong schools: the training and regulating of body, mind, and breath (Chi/vital energy).

The program consists of a variety of body healing postures, a number of mind quieting and focusing methods, and a series of breath energy exercises.

When you complete the course, you will be able to select and combine appropriate postures, meditative techniques and breathing skills, designing your own unique Chi Kung practice, based on your level of health, degree of skill and purpose for training.

The source of my system is Hu Bin. I was drawn to these methods in 1982, when Leonard Orr (America's Father of Conscious Breathing) gave me a book that he had found on a visit to Hong Kong.  It was an English version, derived from a Greek translation of the original Chinese text written by Hu Bin.

For more than two years, I lived with that book by my bedside. I studied every word, and practiced each exercise religiously. I was inspired by the results.  I wrote to the publisher in Kowloon in order to communicate with the author.

In June of 1985, I received a formal invitation from the master himself.  Two months later, I flew to Communist China on a one-way ticket. (At the time, I couldn't afford the round trip airfare.)  I found myself on the streets of Beijing excited about the opportunity of a lifetime: to train directly under the highest living Chi Kung master in the world!

For one month, he blessed me with all that I could hold, and more than I could integrate.  I visited hospitals where Chinese Medical Breathing Exercises were used, and I observed Chi Kung being applied by many people with a variety of ailments.

On several occasions, Hu Bin demonstrated what I consider to be "miraculous" abilities.  And I met a number of other remarkable people, masters who had reached very high levels of human potential.  I watched young and old practitioners perform all kinds of unusual displays of force and balance, extraordinary feats of strength and resilience.

At Hu Bin's request, and after ten years of practice, I began to pass on what I had learned, I am pleased to share the art and science of Chinese Medical Breathing Exercises with anyone who is ready.

Everyone can learn Qigong exercises for self-healing and health maintenance.

If you have any health issues…

If you would like to be less susceptible to the flu or colds…

If you would like to flood your body in healing energy…

If you would like to be free of pain…

Then, you need to discover, explore, and develop the Practice of Chi Kung.

This healing method is absolutely real.  I have been studying and practicing it for many years. As a matter of fact, I've helped many people remove pain and sickness from their lives, by passing on these simple, yet powerful Chi Kung exercises and techniques.

Try it for yourself!

Many medical studies here in the US as well as in China, confirm that strokes, hypertension and the death rates from these conditions, decrease with Chi Kung practice!  The reduction in most control groups was 50%!

Other controlled studies show that sex hormone levels improve. Estrogen increase in males, and decrease in females, can be reversed with Chi Kung!

Bone density increases with practice.

People suffering with malignant cancer show improvement in strength, appetite, freedom from diarrhea, and gain weight, while immune function improves.

Even many of the clinical signs and symptoms of senility and other age related disorders can be reduced, including cerebral function, sexual function, serum lipid levels, and function of endocrine glands.

Alpha brain waves dominate beta waves, and spread to the frontal lobes of the brain during Chi Kung practice.

Even in people with cerebral arteriosclerosis, blood flow to the brain increases, memory improves, dizziness, insomnia, ringing in the ears, and numbness of the limbs, headaches decrease.

Again and again, EEG, biochemical blood tests, psychological, and other tests, all confirm the benefits of Chi Kung.

Many years ago, it was confirmed that combining chi kung with modern medicine resulted in more benefits than modern medical drug treatment alone.

Qigong improves sensory awareness and increases relaxation. This promotes the flow of energy, as well as blood, oxygen, and nutrients, and it improves the elimination of waste products from all the cells of the body.

This increase in the flow of chi, and on the level of microcirculation of blood and nutrients, nourishes diseased tissue, and stressed organs and systems. Chi Kung naturally promotes drug uptake by tissue and cells due to improved microcirculation.

Chi Kung practice enables the body to heal itself! This ancient practice can eliminate stress, tension, pain and sickness from your body so fast, that it will amaze you!

In 1985, I made the radical statement that Breath Energy Training (a western style of Chi Kung) “was to psychosomatic illness and stress related disorders, what penicillin was to bacterial infection.”

Recently, Bill Manahan, M.D., Assistant Professor of Family Practice and Community Health, University of Minnesota Medical School, and author of the best-selling "Eat For Health" wrote this about Qigong:

"I would place this equal in importance to the incredible and simple discoveries in the forties called antibiotics, and in the fifties called immunizations."

Richard Gerber, MD, author of  “Vibrational Medicine: New Choices for Healing Ourselves” as well as "Vibrational Medicine for the 21st Century," writes:

“It is believed that by moving Qi through the body, you can heal yourself of many ailments."

When you learn the basics of Chi Kung, and begin to practice, you can:

  • Improve your metabolism, digestion, and elimination.
  • Control your weight
  • Regain a more youthful appearance.
  • Stimulate your lymph system.
  • Build up your immune system (become less susceptible to viruses, etc)
  • Speed recovery from illness and injury.
  • Improve circulation.
  • Balance your energy.
  • Eliminate the symptoms of arthritis and chronic fatigue.
  • Slow down your aging process.
  • Reduce tension and blocks.
  • Increase oxygen supply to your cells, tissues and organs.
  • Improve joint strength, mobility and flexibility.
  • Reduce pain.
  • Strengthen and soothe the nervous system.
  • Feel more calm, content, and energized.

Energy blocks, excess or deficient Chi may result from disease, injury, or stress. Sickness, pain, and other health anomalies are caused when Qi or Chi energy is blocked.

When Chi cannot flow through the body, it builds up where it is not wanted or needed, and other parts of the body do not get enough of it. This principle is well known and proven with acupuncture.

Self-training and practice of Chi Kung removes blocks, and increase the flow of energy throughout the body, healing and restoring vitality and balance to spirit, mind, and body.

For thousands of years Chi Kung has been taught and practiced in secret, within small closed groups. Only in the last 30 or 40 years, has it become known to the masses of Chinese people and to the rest of the world.

Chi Kung is one of the oldest forms of Chinese medicine. Many teachers have tried to make the system mysterious, offering little bits at a time, and only to “loyal followers.”

Those days are gone. Today over a hundred million people practice Qigong exercises! I began to study Chi Kung in 1980. I traveled to China in 1985 to study with the foremost living master. I began to train practitioners in 1995. To date, over 20,000 people in over 30 countries have already learned the basics of this healing method at my seminars in over 30 countries.

The exercises you learn will depend on your level of health, degree of skill, and purpose in training. Nothing of what I have learned is held back from my students and clients!
