Breath & Breathing Notes Dan Brulé/March 2005 Someone recently asked me: “Can I really reach the highest states of consciousness and being without having to go through serious struggle, effort, pain and suffering?” (Of course I said: Yes!) And he asked: “Why does breathing have to be work anyway?” (And of course I said: It doesn’t!) Remember what Jesus said about the “lilies in the field” not having to work or struggle to express their magnificent beauty and their natural perfection? That having been said, I added this reminder from one of my favorite teachers: “There are two kinds of suffering: one kind leads to growth and the other to more suffering.” Breathwork is about each of us finding our way, our own way, of working with the breath, our own way of allowing the breath to work its magic with us! Good Breathworkers are skilled and practiced in a wide range of breath awareness and conscious breathing methods, forms, styles, approaches, techniques, exercises, and meditations. Good Breathworkers can remain open and loving, conscious and aware, relaxed and resourceful, focused and present, caring and curious… regardless of where the “breath of life” leads them (or their clients). The best Breathworkers are as at home with the most intense and dynamic shamanic/kundalini type rhythms as they are with the most subtle and sublime breath/energy flows. It has been said that Rebirthing Breathwork is like "setting off a bomb in your basement," and that Holotropic Breathwork is like "burning down a forest to roast a pig.” There are even rumors that people have died as a result of breathing! Despite these fears and fantasies, several million people have already done Breathwork, only to report profoundly healing, powerfully positive, life changing benefits and results. In Breathwork just as in life, what one person finds exhilarating, another may find horrifying. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. What bores one person might thrill another. What delights one person might appall another. Good Breathworkers don’t try to force square pegs into round holes. And they don’t try to fit everyone into the same size shoe. Depending on your level of health, your degree of skill, or your purpose in training, one method, style, form, or approach may suit you better than another.
