I visited Cuba for the first time in early April. What a unique adventure! We held programs at the Museum of the Revolution, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the University. Several hundred people showed up each day to breathe! Thank you to Roberto (El Happy Coach) for organizing and coordinating everything. As Breathworkers, we cannot make money in Cuba, but we sure can make a difference! If you would like to serve in Cuba, please let me know.

After Cuba, I spent a week in West Palm Beach and then enjoyed a week in Cancun!

Breathwork for Back Pain!

Lower back pain is a very common issue with so many people around the world. Someone once told me that back pain is the price we paid in evolving from a four-legged creature to an upright being! Perhaps you have a history of lower back pain. I’ve had several episodes over the years. In fact, I had a mild experience of it just a few days ago.

There are many ideas and theories about the causes and cures for back pain. They range from mechanical to genetic, from emotional and psychological to metaphysical and spiritual. Maybe the problem is that your bed is too hard or it’s too soft. Maybe the problem is sleeping on your stomach. Maybe smoking, or the shoes you wear, or the habit of carrying your bag on the same shoulder all the time is the problem.

There is a wide range of strategies and solutions, and a host of healing theories and treatment approaches. There are muscle relaxants and pain medications; surgeons, chiropractors, osteopaths, and massage therapists; there are traction devices and back braces, heat packs, cold packs, laser therapy, stem cell implants, and exercises (yoga may be your best bet).

Many people argue that some of the treatments actually make the problem worse. But the good news is that one third of backaches are probably due to simple sprains and strains, which take care of themselves in a week or so, with no need for special medical attention.

I agree with the approach that Dr. Sarno lays out in his book, The Mind Body Prescription.

And there is always the ‘mind over matter’ approach: “If you don’t mind, it don’t matter!”

Naturally, I put Breathwork at the top of the list. You can learn very simple and effective breathing exercises and techniques to relieve pinched nerves, reduce pain, while strengthening your core and restoring normal spinal function.

Relaxation of course is a key to pain relief, but it can be awfully difficult to relax when you are in severe pain! In fact, most of the time, relaxation only comes after the pain goes away. And so, my advice is to be patient with yourself and your body.

Practice breathing into the pain while relaxing whatever muscles you can. Relax any muscles that seem unrelated to your lower back. You may be very surprised to discover that tension in your jaw, neck, or shoulders can contribute to lower back problems.

One of the main things we practice is the “breath release technique.” The idea is to ‘snap the exhale loose’ or set the exhale free, to release the exhale quickly and completely while deliberately releasing and relaxing all your muscles and joints at the same time.

And here is a specific technique that has helped thousands of people. It has been called “decompressive breathing.” I often use it after long drives, long flights, or long hours on the computer.

Because your diaphragm is connected to your lower back, when you play with your breathing, you can influence the movement and alignment of your spinal vertebrae.

Practice this:

Take a deep breath into your lungs. Feel your chest and ribcage expand from top to bottom, front to back, and especially from side to side. Then, hold that chest expansion in place while you consciously use your abdominal muscles to exhale, emptying the air out of your lungs.

As you are exhaling, you should feel your belly button traveling toward your spine and you should get the sense that all your abdominal organs are being drawn up into your rib cage. You should also feel that you are pulling up on the perineum, and that your pelvis wants to rotate up and forward. The feeling is like tucking your tailbone in.

Do this exercise slowly in a meditative way. Feel into all the places that are being affected by the practice. Relax all the muscles and places that are not needed to accomplish the exercise.

Some people combine this exercise with breath-holding at the empty point (after exhaling all the air out). It’s a good idea to gently wiggle and squirm in order to loosen up the pelvic and lower back areas while exhaling or breath-holding.

The recommended practice formula is 10 + 10 + (10 x 2): ten minutes in the morning, ten minutes at night, and ten times during the day for two minutes.

Good luck in your practice and many blessings on your path!
